A good hamburger

I have been searching for a decent hamburger all my life, never able to verbalize what a “good” hamburger really is. Until now.

Last night, I ate at the “Burger Bar” near my hotel in Amsterdam. And I finally found it.
First, it must be a sesame seed bun. And the bun must be soft and moist. Second, its a hamburger,  not a salad. Toppings are ok
In moderation. Third, the bin must do an adequate job of covering the meat and toppings. In-n-out fails here. Finally, the meat has to be decent quality,  soft and tender, and neither too large nor too small. Most pub burgers fail here, and serve great quantities of highly paced beef.

Burger Bar did this. Amazing to think I would have to come to 5000 miles to get something quintessentially American.

Political zeitgeist 3/20/2011

Right now the political situation for the 2012 presidential election looks wide open. That said, here are some notable observations at this point in time.
* The tea party looks to be fragmenting the republicans. We a here at the point where we have just signed another 3 week CR to keep the govt running, and the House freshmen want more cuts, while boehner worries it may be too much.
* the President looks prudent in the face of Tunisia Egypt and Libya.
* no front runner has appeared on the GOP side, and only one candidate has even declared: Herman Cain.
* obama’s weaknesses appear to be weakness on supporting the revolutions in Africa soon enough, and letting the congress drive the budget discussions.
* a govt shutdown does not seem likely at this point.

Political update Feb 13

The current state of political flux:

  • The president’s approval is above 50%
  • He will propose a budget on monday with cap of domestic spending at 2008 levels
  • Ron Paul won the CPAC straw poll.
  • Egypt is over, and it looks like the WH strategy worked.
  • Mubarak stepped down in time to eliminate embarrassment over Panetta’s “He’s going to leave” moment.

Representative democracy

The role of the elected in a representative democracy is to represent the people's opinion when it is discernable, and when it is not, use judgment to determine what is in their best interest. Anything else is a perversion of the system.
